My Ruthless Ex And My Husband Chapter 01

Mervin Aguilar and I had been locked in a six-year shadow war of attrition.
He'd driven my mother to jump off a building, leaving her paralyzed.
I'd leaked his company's confidential information and pushed him into bankruptcy.
Everyone thought we'd keep tearing at each other like this for the rest of our lives.
But when we met again, he had already clawed his way back, handling our friends' questions with practiced ease.
"Remember when we were teenagers? We used to talk about finding someone we loved at eighteen, getting married by twenty-five, and having a kid before twenty-eight. Mervin, how far along are you on that checklist?"
"Getting engaged soon."
"Damn, you're the first one of us to hit that milestone!"
I quietly twisted the ring on my ring finger.
They had no idea that I'd already completed all three.

A girl walked in through the door. It was Mervin's fiancée, Winifred Hutchins.
She was young, pretty, and impeccably well-mannered. After offering everyone a polite nod, she took the seat beside him.
But Mervin didn't look at her; his eyes stayed on me.
I could feel the curious, probing gazes gathering around us.
It was only natural. A few years ago, the feud between Mervin and me had been headline gossip.
I picked up my bag and stood, intending to leave. But the two people beside me seemed to think I was about to lunge forward and claw Winifred's face off. So, they instinctively grabbed my shoulders to hold me back.
I raised an eyebrow at them.
"Uh, well. Isadora, where are you going?"
"The restroom."
"Oh, I see." They released me and sat back down with awkward laughter.
As I walked away, I caught snippets of their hushed whispers.
"After two years, Isadora's gotten much less feisty."
"Yeah. My heart was in my throat just now! If it were in the past, she would've torn Winifred's face apart."
"Guess she's leaving to nurse her heartbreak. She's still hung up on Merv after all this time."
"Well, since she's not causing trouble, tell security to stand down."
When I stepped into the hallway, I saw two lines of bodyguards who stiffened at the sight of me. Their leader touched his earpiece and motioned for them to disperse.
I sat alone on the lawn outside and called my daughter. She chattered happily on the other end, telling me about a new story she'd heard today.
A moment later, Mervin and his group wandered out as well.
No matter how big the crowd, we'd always spot each other in an instant.
"Mr. Aguilar, do you have anything to say to the person who drove you into bankruptcy back then?"
Mervin let out a soft laugh and stared straight into the camera.
"I saw her today. Her eyes are still as beautiful as ever. If I get the chance, I'll gouge them out with my own hands and make a necklace for my fiancée."
Everyone was dumbstruck, except me. Compared to what we'd done to each other over those six years, that was nothing.
"And did you take any revenge back then?" someone asked.
Mervin replied, "I crippled her mother. Does that count?"
I swirled the wine in my glass, eyes lowered to the fairy-tale illustrations glowing on my phone screen, soothing my daughter in a gentle, steady voice.
My cool, unruffled demeanor clearly infuriated Mervin. Or maybe we simply hated each other on instinct.
He walked over and sat beside me, pressing a finger onto my phone screen.
After glancing at it, he scoffed, "After everything you've done, Hail Mary suits you a hell of a lot better."
Then he waved a hand at the girl behind him. "Winnie, come here. This is Isadora Busby, our class monitor back in college."
Winifred stepped forward with a sweet smile and extended her hand. "Isadora, nice to meet you. I'm Winifred Hutchins, Merv's fiancée."
While everyone was waiting for me to explode, all I said was a casual "Hi."
