My Parents Always Chose Her Over Me Chapter 01

My elder sister, Lenora Calder, and I were both born with failing kidneys. Without a transplant, neither of us had a future.
For as long as I could remember, my parents had favored me.
My mom once drove 16 hours across the state just to bring me my favorite brownies.
My dad "borrowed" a patch of soil from the neighbor's vegetable garden and planted roses there for ten years just because I liked them.
Then, on my sixteenth birthday, Mom pulled me into her arms with a bright smile.
"Rosie, you're finally strong enough. It's time to give Nora a kidney."

The anesthesia still fogged my mind, my eyelids heavy as lead.
Through the blur, I made out my parents leaning over my bed.
Something in me softened, easing the grievance I'd felt about the donation.
I knew they cared about me.
Giving Lenora my kidney had been worth it.
I tried to say "Mom," but my voice caught.
Mom spoke first, her hand resting lightly on my blanket, careful not to touch my wound.
"Rosie, you're awake? How are you feeling?
"Don't move, okay? You don't wanna rip the stitches."
Her worried tone made my nose sting.
But in the very next second, her concern shifted elsewhere.
Both she and Dad turned toward the bed beside mine.
Dad's voice rose immediately.
"Nurse! Lenora's awake!
"Come check on her. How is the new kidney? No signs of rejection, right?"
Mom rushed to Lenora's bedside and grabbed her hand.
"Nora, sweetheart, does it hurt? Tell me if something feels off."
A nurse walked in and went straight to Lenora's bed, ignoring me completely.
I listened as they talked about vitals and early rejection monitoring.
My parents nodded at every word the nurse said, as though it were Holy Writ.
No one paid me any mind, like I were invisible.
After what felt like an eternity, another nurse came in with a meal—mushy soup and bland chicken with peas.
Mom hurried over, took the tray, and thanked her.
Then she scooped up a spoonful, blew on it, and checked the temperature with the back of her hand.
A spark of joy lit up inside me—Mom still cared.
She remembered I'd just had surgery, and I needed food.
I watched with hopeful eyes—only to see her carry the meal she'd carefully adjusted to the right temperature straight to Lenora.
"Here you go, sweetheart. Let me feed you.
"The hospital made this just for you.
"It's good for the kidney, and it'll help you feel better faster."
Lenora wrinkled her nose and took a hesitant bite.
Only after Mom finished feeding her did she seem to remember me.
She snapped her head around. "Rosie, the nurse said your food will be here in a bit. Just wait a minute."
I did wait.
By the time it arrived, the soup on Lenora's tray had gone cold.
The metal lunchbox was icy, and the greasy dishes inside completely killed my appetite.
I said nothing and quietly dug in.
In the afternoon, Dad came in with a beautiful fruit basket.
He set it on my bedside table, and my eyes lit up with excitement.
He smiled, rubbing his hands together. "Rosie, look. Your aunt sent this.
"She said it's for our little hero, to thank you for what you did."
Warmth spread through my chest.
At least someone remembered my sacrifice.
I was about to smile when Dad kept going.
"But Nora just had the transplant.
"She's still weak and needs the vitamins more.
"Let's give it to her first, okay?
"You're young; you'll recover in no time.
"I'll get you something better once you're discharged. A whole box, if you want!"
He picked up the basket and carried it to Lenora's side.
Her table was already piled high with gifts like flowers, fruit, and supplements.
Mine held only the cold lunchbox.
There wasn't even a get-well card.
Dad kept coaxing Lenora.
"Nora, look what I've got you.
"Which one do you want? I'll peel it for you."
I watched his back and Mom hovering over Lenora, as if she were the only patient there.
Then my gaze dropped to the thick bandages wrapped around my waist.
The incision throbbed with every breath.
