The Betrayed Wife's Cold Revenge Chapter 01

Daphne Nielson—my husband's childhood sweetheart—suffered from what she called “seasonal depression.” Every autumn, like clockwork, she'd become fragile, emotionally brittle, even suicidal.
That’s why Benjamin Mortimer, my husband, dropped everything each year to whisk her off abroad for three full months, swearing it was the only thing that could save her.
“She’s just so vulnerable, Amy. Don’t overthink it, okay?”
Over time, I got used to him disappearing for a quarter of every year.
One year, on a business trip in France, I spotted him in a park with a little girl who looked about five
“Daddy, why do you only spend three months a year with Mommy and me? I want you to stay so much longer!”
Benjamin scooped her up with a doting smile, his other hand laced with Daphne's.
“Daddy's in a difficult position, sweetheart. There's no way around it right now. Be good for me, Maisie. When you're eighteen, Daddy will bring you home to meet your grandparents.”
I slipped away quietly, arranged everything in silence, and acted as if I'd seen nothing.
Autumn faded into winter, and Benjamin finally called.
“Amy, Daphne's doing much better now. I'll be home tomorrow.”
I stared at the coffin I'd already prepared and the family pledge document beside it. A cold smile curved my lips.
“Okay,” I said softly. “I can't wait to see you.”

It was an early autumn afternoon in Paris when I froze in the middle of the plaza, staring at the three of them.
Benjamin was tossing crumbs to the pigeons while the little girl clung to his leg.
“Daddy, why do you only spend three months a year with Mommy and me? I want you to stay forever!”
My mind went blank, a deafening buzz filling my ears.
Since when did Benjamin have a daughter?
I told myself I must be mistaken.
Maybe he was just fond of Daphne's child—maybe he'd become her godfather, and the girl, too young to understand, had started calling him Daddy.
Daphne leaned against his shoulder, her voice soft but edged with resentment.
“Benny, I've stayed by your side for seven years and have nothing to show for it. Maisie's already five. Are you really going to make us wait another thirteen years?”
Benjamin sighed, helpless.
“I don't have a choice, Daffy. The Mortimers and the Waverlys have been tied together for generations. I had no choice but to marry Amelia. On paper, she'll always be my wife. If she ever finds out about you… you know how ruthless the Waverlys can be. I'm afraid they'd come after you.”
He paused, his tone hardening with resolve.
“But don't worry. According to our family's rules, children only gain inheritance rights at eighteen. Maisie is my daughter—she'll be entitled to the Mortimer fortune. Once that's locked in, even if Amelia finds out, she won't be able to touch you.”
Daphne seemed convinced. She let out a small sigh and rested a hand on her still-flat stomach.
“Fine. But you can't have children with her. Otherwise Maisie and the baby I'm carrying will just get bullied by them later.”
Benjamin gently covered her hand with his own.
“Don't worry. Maisie and our baby are all I need.”
His voice dropped to a near whisper.
“As for Amelia… I've been slipping things into her food and drinks for years. She'll never conceive. The Mortimers are done being chained to the Waverlys. This cursed connection ends with me.”
Something inside me shattered.
So that was the reason.
Six years of marriage, no children—and I'd even gone for fertility tests. My results were perfect, yet somehow I could never get pregnant.
Benjamin's grandmother, Ethel Mortimer, had even patted my hand consolingly once.
“Take your time, dear. Children come when the time is right.”
It turned out Benjamin had been sabotaging my chances the whole time.
Shock and heartbreak gave way to cold, burning rage. My trembling fingers tightened around my phone as I pulled it out.
“Aunt Minnie,” I said when she answered. “Benjamin's been cheating on me. It's time we enforce the family rules.
“I need your help getting a coffin big enough for three.”
The next afternoon, I “happened” to stroll down Elysian Fields Avenue—the street they always frequented.
When Benjamin saw me approaching, the easy smile vanished from his face. Panic and confusion took its place, freezing him in place.
