Divorce You And Marry Him Chapter 01

After falling off the cliff, Katherine Calhoun seemed like a completely different person.
In the mornings, she no longer rose before dawn to simmer the mushroom soup her husband, Nicholas Padilla, loved.
She no longer endured the midday heat just to pick him up. The desperate need to steal a few minutes of his time had vanished.
At night, she no longer insisted on leaving a lamp on for him. The lights went out early now, and she no longer waited.
Even when she happened to see Nicholas kissing Samantha Lester, she didn't explode with accusations. She didn't fall apart or sob until she couldn't breathe. She simply looked away, turned around, and left.
"Katie!" Nicholas' voice called after her, suddenly urgent.
She stopped, but she didn't turn around.
Footsteps rushed closer. Nicholas hurried around to her front, blocking her path.
There was a rare flicker of panic on his face. Even the tips of his ears were red, and his eyes locked tightly on hers. "Y-You saw that? It's not what you think. Sammy slipped. I grabbed her to steady her, and neither of us stayed on our feet. We bumped into each other by accident, and that's all!"
He explained too fast and too intensely, like he was terrified she would misunderstand.
Katherine lifted her eyes to him.
He really was handsome. With his brows drawn together and that anxious need to clear himself written plainly in his gaze, he looked unusually alive—more expressive than he ever was on ordinary days.
She used to love that face and every tiny shift in his expression.
But now... it only felt loud.
She pulled her wrist out of his grip and answered flatly, without a ripple in her tone, "You're overthinking it. I didn't assume anything. You don't need to explain. Even if you actually kissed her, it wouldn't matter."
Nicholas froze, like he couldn't process what she'd just said. "What? What do you mean it wouldn't matter?"
He studied her face closely, trying to catch even a hint of forced composure or hidden pain, but there was nothing.
Her eyes were still and bottomless, so calm it made panic crawl up his spine.
"You..." His voice dropped, probing, laced with irritation he didn't want to admit. "You're still angry about before, aren't you? I told you that making you get rid of the baby was unavoidable. And you falling off the cliff was an accident. I tried to save you. I did everything I could—"
"I'm not angry," Katherine cut him off. "I truly don't care anymore. Isn't this what you've always wanted?"
She spoke calmly, almost matter-of-factly. "You always say Samantha has no one to rely on except you, so you let her move into our home. When she's upset, you stay out with her all night and tell me not to make a big deal of it. When she likes my jewelry, you ask me to give it to her and tell me not to make a big deal of it. So now, I'm doing exactly what you wanted. I'm acting the way you prefer. Are you not happy?"
Nicholas was speechless. His throat bobbed as he tried to speak, but not a single word came out.
He'd always wanted Katherine to stop clinging to the issue of him and Samantha, to stop getting jealous and making a scene that turned the household into chaos.
He hadn't loved Katherine when he married her, but over the years, the way she gave him everything she had, completely and sincerely, was like warm coals in the dead of winter. Little by little, it melted the part of him that had frozen over when Samantha married someone else.
His heart wasn't made of stone. He had already decided to let the past go and live well with her.
But who could've expected Samantha to get divorced? When he saw her looking worn out and thin, with no one to rely on, the feelings he thought had gone quiet inside him still rose again. He couldn't help it. He pitied her and couldn't bear to see her struggle. He kept wanting to give her the very best of everything.
As for Katherine, she was his wife. She would always be there, waiting in the same place. She would wait for him to handle Samantha's situation and to settle his mind. Then he'd make it up to her, treat her twice as well, and give her all the love she deserved. They had a whole lifetime.
That was what he always believed.
But now, watching her act like she truly didn't care and even push him away on her own... That solid, unquestioned certainty inside him suddenly cracked.
