Shamed In Front Of Los Angeles Chapter 01

To stand up for my cousin, Leilani Griggs, Wayne Gallagher didn't show up as promised on our engagement day.
He only sent a man to deliver a message, "Last time you grabbed the necklace Leilani liked, making her humiliated at the party. This is just a lesson for you. We'll only talk about the engagement after you apologize to her."
Overnight, I became a laughingstock in Los Angeles.
My big brother, Ralph Floyd, said, "Lani's delicate. Just let her vent her anger this time. Wayne's your fiancé, anyway. Delaying the engagement a few days won't hurt."
Really? Won't hurt?
The Floyd family's dignity wasn't something just anyone could trample on. I turned around and agreed to the marriage alliance with the Quinn family. "Dad, I accept the marriage to the Quinn family."

At the engagement ceremony, the agreed-upon time had long passed, but not a single member of the Gallagher family showed up, and even Wayne was nowhere to be seen.
The guests whispered among themselves, and the Floyd family's relatives grew restless.
The butler asked me quietly, "Ms. Floyd, should we send someone to check on the Gallagher family?"
I shook my head. The time was up, and Wayne wouldn't come.
Just then, the butler led a man in. It was Elton Burr, Wayne's personal assistant. He raised his chin and relayed Wayne's message, "Mr. Gallagher says today's a lesson for Ms. Floyd. Once Ms. Floyd apologizes to Ms. Griggs and Ms. Griggs calms down, Mr. Gallagher will find time to reschedule the engagement.
"Also, Ms. Floyd, you'd better return the necklace you took from Ms. Griggs soon. As a young lady from a respected family, how could you covet someone else's prized possession?"
With that, he left. Before he walked out the door, we heard him tell the butler, "Mr. Gallagher asked me to give this box of pastries to Ms. Griggs. He waited in line personally to buy the puff cake she likes."
His voice faded away. My best friend's face turned livid with anger as she complained, "Wayne's gone too far! How could he humiliate you like this just for Leilani?!"
Amanda Baldry, the elderly maid of the Floyd family, also frowned. "What do we do now? Mr. and Mrs. Floyd haven't come back yet. No one's here to stand up for Ms. Floyd. Are we just gonna watch and let her be bullied like this?"
As she spoke, Ralph walked in, followed by a delicate-looking girl holding a pastry box. It was my cousin, Leilani.
Her eyes red with tears, she placed the pastries on the table beside me and then knelt down with a thud. "Ginny, I had no idea Wayno would skip the engagement banquet just to stand up for me. It's all my fault."
Ralph immediately helped her up. "Lani, what are you doing? This is all because Ginny refused to give you that necklace. Wayne's just standing up for you, teaching her a lesson. Otherwise, who knows what trouble she'll cause in the future?"
Leilani shook her head, tears streaming down her delicate face, "Ralphie, it's my fault. I shouldn't have liked that necklace. How could someone of my status be worthy of it? I was being greedy. It's only right that Ginny isn't willing to give it to me.
"After all, I'm just an orphan living under the Floyd family's roof."
Ralph disagreed, saying anxiously, "Nonsense! I've always treated you like my own sister! What orphan? You're also a young lady of the Floyd family. Who dares to say a single word against you?"
Then he glared at me. "Ginny, are you still going to be so hard-hearted? Can't you see how sad Lani is? What's wrong with letting her have that necklace? What good will it do you to make a scene like this?
"Everyone will say the Floyd family's eldest daughter is so petty over a necklace that even her fiancé looks down on her! Where will your dignity be then?!"
I looked at Ralph, who was accusing me, my heart filled with disappointment.
He used to be the brother who loved me the most. But ever since Leilani was taken in by the Floyd family, he'd favored her, who always appeared weak and tearful. Whenever Leilani shed a tear, he'd always think it was my fault. In his eyes, I was his unreasonable younger sister, who'd been overbearing and bullying Leilani.
