I Let My Husband Cheat Until I Got What I Want Chapter 01

My husband has a devoted and capable female director by his side.
From her prime of youth to the age of thirty,
She has stood by Charles Williams as he conquered the business world, remaining unmarried to this day.
While I had become a full-time homemaker long ago to oversee our daughter's education, turning a blind eye to their affair.
A friend complained on my behalf:
"Jessica Pearson is practically acting like the second lady of the house. How can you endure it?"
I smiled: "Why should I worry?"
It's merely a low-cost method of managing subordinates.
There's a term on the internet that describes it perfectly.
It's called—sexual capital co-optation.
--
While Charles was out at sea for a team-building retreat with his staff, I had just finished dinner at home with our daughter.
My best friend Emma Miller's message notifications started pinging incessantly.
A dozen photos flooded in.
A call followed immediately, the muffled sound of waves slapping against a hull coming through the receiver.
Her voice was laced with anger:
"Victoria Hamilton, why didn't you come to the retreat?"
"That Jessica is practically glued to Mr. Williams!"
Emma's husband is a business partner of our company, and this retreat was organized jointly by both sides.
As for the photos...
I had already seen them on Jessica's Instagram.
There was one that was particularly glaring.
On the deck, against a backdrop of high skies and wide seas.
Jessica was wearing a sheer, bright yellow bikini—scant fabric that perfectly outlined the curves she was so proud of.
She was clinging tightly to Charles's arm, while Charles had his arm around her waist, their skin pressing against each other.
She held up a glass of champagne, smiling brightly and confidently.
In almost every photo, she and Charles stood in the spotlight.
It seemed that she was Charles' wife.
She hadn't even bothered to limit the audience or set it to "only visible to me."
This way, the comments section was full of uniform compliments and blessings.
It also served to let me see everything clearly.
Yet, beneath these photos that were so open they bordered on provocative.
She cherry-picked a few comments like "Certified Boss's Wife" and "Perfect Match!"
And replied with a feigned attempt to cover it up:
"Oh my, don't talk nonsense!"
"Victoria might get angry if she sees this."
While they were enjoying the sea breeze and champagne over there, while here at home—
the nanny happened to be on leave,
and I had to handle some chores myself.
I was peeling an orange for my daughter, Alice Hamilton, for her after-dinner snack. Juice splattered, and a sharp, cold sting of acidity seeped under my fingernails.
At that same moment,
a message from Jessica popped up at the top of my screen.
She sent two photos.
One was the intimate photo, the other a screenshot of the Instagram comments section.
She was clearly terrified I might miss it, yet she pretended to explain:
[Victoria, the sea breeze was too strong. Mr. Williams only held me because he was afraid I'd lose my balance. Please don't overthink it!]
After I saw the photos, Charles also sent a message offering the exact same excuse.
I smiled and replied: [It's fine. Stay safe.]
I brought a segment of orange in my mouth and replied to Emma, my tone flat:
"Until Alice goes to college, I won't get involved in any company matters."
She shrieked, indignant on my behalf:
"Not get involved?
She's already acting like the second mistress of the house."
"I remember she used to be just a little assistant of yours."
"Now she seduces your husband in front of many people, and you can still take it?"
She had just returned to the country, so there were things she didn't know yet.
For instance, the relationship between Jessica and Charles had been going on for over a decade.
I let out a chuckle.
Emma was frustrated by my lack of backbone.
"You're still laughing?
She doesn't respect you at all!
Victoria!"
She was right.
