Love Was Only An Experiment Chapter 01

Scarlett Miller was the most arrogant and dazzling heir of high society.
She was born with breathtaking beauty; a single shift of her gaze could easily steal a man's soul. They said the line of men obsessed with her could stretch for miles, yet Ms. Miller couldn't be bothered to even lift an eyelid at them.
That was until her best friend made a bet with her: "Scarlett, if you can land my uncle, Sebastian Sterling, you can have your pick of any car in my garage!"
Sebastian, the president of the Blackwood Group, was cold, ascetic, noble, and arrogant. He was the untouchable person in the hearts of countless debutantes—rumor had it that not even a female mosquito could get close to him.
But Scarlett smiled; she had never failed to get what she wanted.
However, plans never quite keep up with changes.
On the very first day of the bet, she stumbled upon a drugged Sebastian. Scarlett, who had already intended to get close to him, accidentally became his antidote.
After that night, the eternal iceberg that was Sebastian seemed to have a crack chiseled into it by her.
For three years, Sebastian seemed addicted. Before the floor-to-ceiling windows of his office, in the restroom of his private jet, and even in the changing room of the golf course... they tried every position and entangled themselves in every possible place.
Scarlett became disappointed through these countless intimate moments.
She thought this man, revered like a deity, belonged to her as well.
Until tonight. After they had been intimate in the car, she noticed his sapphire cufflink had fallen off, so she picked it up to return it to him.
The door to the private dining room at the end of the corridor was ajar. Just as she was about to push it open, she heard laughter coming from inside.
"Sebastian, just came down from a life of ease and pleasure, didn't you?
That girl Scarlett is usually as arrogant as a wild cat, looking down on everyone. How is it that in front of you, she's so sweet and delicate? It makes my heart itch just watching.
When do you plan to marry her?"
Scarlett's footsteps paused, becoming nervous.
Then, she heard that cold voice, familiar to her very bones.
"She's just a bed partner. Why would I marry her?"
A few short words, spoken lightly, yet they were like knives quenched in ice, stabbing precisely into Scarlett's heart, leaving it instantly mangled and bloody.
The private dining room fell into a strange, dead silence. Clearly, even his brothers were shocked by this blunt and cruel definition.
Who knows how much time passed before someone cautiously broke the silence: "N-No way, Sebastian?
It's been three years... Do you... does your heart still... still hold that first love?"
First love?
Scarlett's mind buzzed, going completely blank.
Sebastian... has a first love?
She stood outside the door like a puppet with its soul drawn out, listening as Sebastian gave a faint hum of affirmation.
"When we broke up back then, she said to give her three years. She would go try being with others, and let me try others too.
If we still liked each other, we would get back together."
"She loves to play and lacks security, so I did as she wished."
"It's been three years. I'm done trying."
He paused, his voice seeming to contain a trace of extremely faint, yet unmistakable expectation, "She should be coming back, too."
Scarlett felt as if she had been struck by lightning. Her whole body went cold, her fingertips trembling.
These three years of intimacy, the countless moments she thought their hearts were connected—it was all just an experiment for him to 'try someone else'?!
"Then what about Scarlett?"
"With her temper, spoiled and explosive like a little firecracker, if she found out..."
"Bang!"
Before the words could land, the heavy door of the private dining room was shoved open by Scarlett.
Everyone inside shocked, turning in unison to look at the entrance.
Scarlett stood there, her face terrifyingly pale. Only those alluring eyes were red, looking as if they were about to bleed.
She didn't look at anyone else; her gaze was nailed dead onto the man sitting in the seat of honor.
Sebastian wore a crisp suit, his back straight, his posture composed.
He showed no surprise or panic at her sudden appearance, remaining as cold and unflappable as ever, as if the world collapsing before him wouldn't make him blink.
But this very calmness was like the final handful of salt rubbed into Scarlett's bleeding heart. Because if he liked her even a little, he wouldn't react like this right now!
She walked up to him, looking at the face she had loved for three years, her voice hoarse: "Sebastian, don't you have anything to say to me?"
Sebastian raised his eyes and looked at her calmly.
"There is nothing to say. It is exactly what you heard."
"We are bed partners. I always thought you were clear on that."
"Beatrice Sterling made a bet with you. If you won me over, you could pick any luxury car from her garage. If you think cars aren't enough..."
His long fingers took a black bank card from his inner suit pocket and slid it gently across the coffee table to Scarlett.
"Here is a hundred million. Consider it payment for... being on call for these past three years."
"From now on, we are done."
Finished speaking, he stood up and prepared to leave.
But the moment he passed her, Scarlett suddenly reached out and grabbed his wrist tightly!
Her hand was ice cold, gripping so hard her knuckles turned white.
Sebastian's footsteps paused.
Then, he heard her—someone usually so proud—using all her strength to hold onto him like a drowning woman clutching driftwood. Word by word, her voice broken but smashing clearly into the silent private dining room:
"But... I fell for you!"
Sebastian, I fell for you!
She didn't know when she fell for him.
Maybe it was when she was too lazy to wear shoes in winter, and he crouched down, his warm palm holding her cold ankle to put on her slippers;
Maybe it was after her appendicitis surgery, groggy with pain, and the first thing she saw was him guarding her bedside, dark circles under his eyes;
Maybe it was countless late nights when he returned from social events, smelling faintly of alcohol, yet remembering she feared thunder and pulling her into his arms...
Bit by bit, trivial and ordinary, yet they gathered into a surging tide that completely drowned her.
But now, he casually tells her she was just a bed partner?!
Sebastian, how cruel you are!
Sebastian's thin lips moved, about to speak, but the next second, his phone rang.
He took it out, the screen lit up, and a new message preview flashed right before Scarlett's eyes.
[Sebastian, it's been three years. I tried, but I still only love you. Let's get back together.]
In that instant, Scarlett felt her world completely collapse.
Sebastian's gaze lingered on the screen for a moment, and then, bit by bit, he pried open Scarlett's fingers that were tightly gripping him.
"I'm sorry."
He said, "I didn't fall for you."
With that, he turned and strode away, leaving without a backward glance.
