I Had No Expectations Left Chapter 01
Two days after I ran away from home, my brother—Landon Norris—found me at the hospital entrance.
He grabbed my clothes, his eyes bloodshot, and shouted, "You ran away just because I slapped you. Are you trying to drive me crazy before you're satisfied?!"
He added, "How long are you going to keep this up? I'm begging you, can't you be a little more sensible like Rosa?"
This time, I didn't explain myself or argue back.
I quietly followed him home and became the perfect, well-behaved younger sister.
He didn't like me crying, so I never shed another tear.
I didn't want him to think I was petty, so I gave everything to Rosalie Dunroe.
Landon thought I was sulking and wanted to see how long I could keep pretending.
But he didn't know that I wasn't pretending—I just no longer had any expectations.
The day I left home, I went to the hospital.
That slap left me permanently deaf in one ear.
From that hospital visit, I also learned that I had leukemia.
For the rest of my days, I only wanted to live quietly.
But I hoped that in my next life, I wouldn't have a brother like him anymore.
***
The night before Thanksgiving, Landon used my money on a night out with Rosalie.
Before she passed away, my grandmother left me a bank card with 15,000 dollars, saying it was for my future.
A few days earlier, Landon called me petty, so I gave all my valuable belongings to Rosalie, including that bank card.
I kept receiving bank transaction notifications.
They first bought 8,000 dollars worth of fireworks.
Then, they went out for a lavish meal before hitting a nightclub.
At midnight, they spent the final 800 dollars on the card.
Rosalie posted proudly on her Instagram. "I've got everyone admiring me for having a brother like Don!"
The photo showed her hand resting suggestively on a handsome man's abs.
It turned out Landon had hired three gigolos for her.
Landon was very rich and owned several companies.
He spent all my money and even allowed Rosalie to post something like that, which had been deliberate.
He thought I was still sulking, so he kept testing when I would finally break.
But my heart was as calm as still water, without the slightest ripple.
My stomach felt empty, so I made myself some pasta.
After eating, I took my medicine.
Just as I was about to throw away the empty pill bottle, the door swung open.
I was startled, my grip on the pill bottle loosening. In the end, it fell and rolled under the coffee table.
Landon was a little drunk, and when he saw me standing there, he scoffed.
"Why aren't you asleep yet? Did spending all your money make you so upset you couldn't sleep?"
Before I could speak, he continued on his own, "You've been sulking for three months. You're pretty good at holding out. Alexis, I want to see how long you can keep pretending."
As he spoke, he staggered slightly.
I hurried over to help him, but Rosalie shoved me away.
"Can't you see that Don is drunk? Why are you making things worse?"
I was pushed aside as she supported Landon and led him into the bedroom.
I could only pick up the coat Landon had thrown on the floor, hang it up, then headed to the kitchen to pour a glass of warm water.
Just as I was about to bring it over, Rosalie came out of Landon's room.
She looked at me with disgust and said, "Alexis, don't you think you're pathetic? Since you already ran away from home once, why didn't you stay far away instead of letting Landon find you?"
