Pills For Her Future Chapter 01
When I was 12, my younger sister, Starlette Caffyn, accidentally started a fire in the art studio.
I pulled her out with all the strength I had.
When I woke up, my mind felt foggy, and my right hand looked like a piece of charred charcoal.
My parents called me a hero for saving Starlette.
From then on, they doted on me endlessly.
Starlette took over my dream and stepped onto the stage in my place.
I became like a fragile porcelain doll in the family, always being pampered by them.
Later on, Starlette got sick too.
The doctor said it would cost a lot of money to cure her.
In the middle of the night, I overheard my parents fighting.
"Luna's life is already over! We can't just sit back and let Starie's life be ruined too!
"Are we really going to sacrifice someone with a promising future for someone who's already a lost cause?"
Starlette spoke with a cold, trembling voice.
"Stop fighting. I looked into it. She's disabled. She's not even qualified to donate a kidney to me! What's the point of keeping her alive if she's just going to drain our finances?"
I didn't know what kidney donation was. I just knew Starlette was crying.
I found the box of "rainbow candies" and mixed them into some water.
"If I take all this medicine, I'll get better.
"Then the money we save will be enough to help Starie."

Starlette came rushing over and slapped the things right out of my hand.
Water splashed across the floor, scattering the "rainbow candies" everywhere.
She grabbed my collar and hauled me up from the ground.
"Are you out of your mind, Lunabelle Caffyn?!
"If you want to die, go jump off a building or hang yourself. Why would you even say that?
"Do you want me to spend the rest of my life knowing you died for me?"
I didn't understand what Starlette was talking about.
I didn't want to die. I just wanted to get better.
But my head was spinning so much I couldn't speak. White foam dribbled from the corner of my mouth.
Starlette looked at me with her jaw clenched tightly.
"How can you be so selfish? Ever since we were kids, you've always been like this!
"It was the same during the fire, and it's the same now!
"You really think dying will set you free? All you'll do is make me carry the guilt of hurting you for the rest of my life!
"You'll force me to live in your shadow forever!"
She shook me so hard I thought my head might fly right off.
Mom and Dad heard the noise from the art studio and came running.
When they saw what was happening, they both screamed.
My mind grew foggier, and I couldn't keep my eyes open. All I could hear was Mom crying as she held me.
"Starie, your Dad and I never said we'd give up on you! How could you do this to your sister!"
She turned, her bloodshot eyes glaring fiercely at Starlette.
Dad reached a trembling hand under my nose.
"Thank God it's nothing serious!"
I squinted and watched as he pulled out his phone, his finger hovering over the call button. But he didn't press it.
Mom seemed to notice Dad's hesitation. She cried out, "Patrick! What are you doing? Call an ambulance!"
Dad's voice was so hoarse it was barely recognizable. After a long pause, he finally said, "If we call an ambulance... and get her stomach pumped...
"How are we going to pay for Starie's chemo next month?"
That one sentence stopped Mom's sobbing instantly.
She froze, her hand—which had been wiping my mouth—slowly dropping to her side.
In a daze, my mind cleared for just a moment.
Starlette was sick too. Saving me would cost a lot of money.
And all the family's money was Starlette's life-saving fund.
Starlette looked at them and suddenly let out a jarring laughter.
"What are you two hesitating for?
"Haven't we already decided this long ago?
"Her life was ruined years ago. But me? I have a bright future! I won first prize in the city competition when I was just a teenager. I'm about to study abroad and have my own art exhibition!"
Starlette's words hurt, wounding Mom and Dad's hearts as well as mine.
My vision blurred, and I could only hear the breathing of three people.
Were they actually waiting for me to die by myself?
Right when I was about to give up, Starlette finally broke down.
She hurried over and grabbed the phone from Dad's hand.
"I don't want you to die! Lunabelle! I don't want you to torture me like this for the rest of my life!"
I looked at Starlette's face, which was streaked with tears.
It was like seeing that little girl again, frozen in fear in the middle of the fire.
I struggled to lift my left hand, trying to wipe away her tears.
"Don't cry, Starie."
I didn't really know what it meant to donate a kidney.
But I did understand one thing: staying alive meant we had to spend Starlette's life-saving money.
My parents told me I was a hero for saving Starlette's life.
Then a hero should protect her little sister forever.
