Reborn: Not Saving My Love Chapter 01
Ariella Donovan, the protégé sponsored by my childhood sweetheart, Mathias Kramer, had developed a new type of bionic leg that functioned like a natural human limb and allowed paralyzed patients to walk again.
To lift Ariella's spirits, Mathias insisted on being her first test subject. But something went horribly wrong: the bionic leg somehow malfunctioned mid-use. I lunged to save him, and my own legs got caught in the machinery, crushed into a bloody mess.
Crushed by guilt, Mathias vowed he'd support me, to protect me for the rest of his life, only to complain to Ariella behind my back, "Now she's lost her legs, and she crawls on the floor like a beast every single day. You know what? Every time I sleep with her, it's like I'm fucking a monstrous bitch."
I broke down completely when I overheard that. I careened down the stairs in my wheelchair and died on impact. When I opened my eyes again, I was right back on the day Ariella unveiled her bionic leg invention.

In the lab, Ariella's voice brimmed with excitement and passion. "Ta-da! I've got huge news! My new bionic leg invention is a total success! This history-making research just needs one test subject now. Nail this, and it'll hit the market in no time!
"Now, who's up for being my first guinea pig? His breakfast will be on me for a whole week!"
The lab mates immediately joked and teased her one after another.
"You haven't even run a single test, and you want someone to try this? Are you serious?"
"Exactly! For a week of your breakfast, we might end up with broken legs. Not worth it. Test it on animals first."
Ariella put her hands on her hips, pouted in frustration, and huffed, "Fine! You bunch of skeptics just don't believe in me. Wait till this test works and it's on the market. You'll all be begging to try it!"
She'd barely finished speaking when Mathias volunteered at once. "Since no one else can see your talent, then I'll be your first test subject, Ms. Donovan!" Afraid Ariella might turn him down, he even reached for the bionic leg, ready to strap it on himself.
In my previous life, I'd rushed forward to stop him the second I saw this. Along with the other seniors, all of us tried to talk him out of it. After all, the device had never been tested before. Recklessly experimenting with this could result in unthinkable disaster.
But no one's words stood a chance against Ariella's coquettish giggle. "I knew you're always the best to me, Matt!" And just like that, Mathias plugged in the power without a second thought, then let out a scream of agony that split the air.
In my previous life, I'd hung back, sick with worry, watching every second like a hawk. The second disaster struck, I lunged to yank him free, only for my own legs to be torn to shreds in the machinery.
But this time, I simply stepped back two paces, folded my arms across my chest, and watched with lazy amusement.
Our lab mates took turns trying to talk Mathias out of it, but he wouldn't listen. All eyes turned to me, with silent pleas in every gaze. After all, everyone knew that we were the childhood sweethearts who'd grown up side by side, even engaged to be married.
So I put on a look of tender concern, my voice soft with feigned worry. "Matt, this is really dangerous. Don't do this. Wait till the experiment's actually proven safe, then you can be Ella's guinea pig. What if something goes wrong? What if you lose one of your legs? You're still so young. You'll regret this for the rest of your life, and it'll be too late."
Ariella's nose wrinkled in instant displeasure, a sharp huff escaping her. "Raina, you're just jealous I developed the bionic leg before you. You're deliberately trying to ruin this for me. Matt's always been the best to me. Nothing you say will make him reject me." She then turned to Mathias, her tone melting into a provocative pout, "Matt, am I right?"
Mathias nodded, his gaze soft with doting fondness for her. "Of course, Ella! It's just a little experiment. Rae, stop making a big deal out of nothing."
At that, my smile widened, bright and sweet. I even pulled out my phone, tapping the record button. This perfect moment was far too precious not to keep for a lifetime!
Mathias, as if terrified someone might still stop him, moved fast. Once the bionic leg was strapped on, he shot us a triumphant grin. "Shame none of you are in on this. This is insanely comfortable. Even with it off, I can feel it supporting my calves. This isn't just for helping paralyzed patients stand again, I think. It'll even help people with poor stamina climb mountains."
"Ella, you're a genius!" He turned to Ariella, eyes blazing with excitement. "Let's witness this miracle happen together!" And with that, he slammed his finger down on the switch.
In the blink of an eye, sparks exploded from the device, and the acrid stench of burning metal and wiring filled the lab. Mathias's scream of unendurable agony followed at once. "Ah, my leg! Help! Someone help me!"
Sparks crackled and flew, but the flames were small, no real danger of the fire spreading. Even so, Ariella let out a shrill shriek, clapping a hand over her mouth and stumbling back, desperate to run outside. The senior lab mates lunged to block her, their shouts sharp with urgency.
"Ariella! The switch is right next to you. Hurry and turn it off!"
"Come on! You develop this thing! Only you know how it works. Shut it down, now!"
"Hurry up! Or Mathias will be torn to shreds!"
But Ariella was shaking her head like mad, her voice a panicked shriek. "No! It's too terrifying. I'm scared! You're his friends, aren't you? Save him! Or Raina can do it. She's Matt's fiancée. It's her duty!" Before anyone could react, she shoved me hard toward Mathias and ran out of the lab, gone in a flash.
Her cowardly escape at the critical moment cost Mathias the golden window for rescue. Thick, bright red blood and flesh shards were already seeping from the seams of the bionic leg, oozing into the metal grooves. This horrifying sight made everyone flinch.
I could've lingered, enjoying every second of his agonized screams and thrashing struggles a little longer. But if I stood by too long, he might actually die here, and that would be far too merciful for a beast like him.
So I feigned a sharp jolt of realization, my face flooding with fake urgent panic as I rushed forward. "Matt! Hold on, I'm getting you out of this! You'll be fine!" I yelled, loud enough for everyone to hear, my eyes darting to the fried wiring. "The power cord's completely burned through, and the fuse is blown. We can't shut it off the normal way! Gotta cut the connection with scissors! It's deadly for me too. I could get caught in the machine just like you! But I'd risk it all for you!"
I snapped my head at the frozen seniors. "What are you all waiting for? Hurry and call 911! Now!"
In that split second, every single one of them would've believed that I loved him more than anything. That for him, I'd charge headfirst into danger without a second thought.
