Goodbye My Loveless You Chapter 01
A once-in-a-decade torrential storm descended on the city.
After work, my colleagues left one by one, leaving only me behind to work overtime.
Julian Blackwood sent a message:
[The rain is too heavy. I’ll come pick you up.]
I knew he was trying to make peace.
Last weekend was our wedding anniversary. I had booked a restaurant, but he never showed up.
I waited at the restaurant until closing time.
It wasn’t until I checked my phone that I saw his secretary, Cecilia Vane, post an update on social media.
The photo captured Julian’s sharp, chiseled profile.
The caption read: “So happy for my birthday this year. Thanks to the boss for the treat~”
When I got home, I showed him the photo and confronted him.
He just impatiently pushed my hand away.
“A young girl spending her birthday all alone, far from home-what’s wrong with me, as her boss, showing some concern for a subordinate?”
“Stop making a fuss out of nothing!”
“Can’t we just celebrate an anniversary any year?”
Yeah… can’t we celebrate an anniversary any year?
But isn’t a birthday the same?
From the next day on, the cold war began.
Today was the tenth day.
In the past, I was always the one trying every possible way to make up with him. If he had ever taken the initiative to speak to me like this, I would have been flattered.
But now… I felt nothing.
I just replied with one word: [Okay.]
Six o’clock was our agreed time.
Knowing it was difficult to park right at the company entrance, I walked quickly to the nearby bus stop to wait.
By nine o’clock, the rain was pouring harder.
Even though I stood under a billboard for shelter, my pant legs were completely soaked by the driving storm.
Yet Julian still hadn’t arrived.
I unlocked my phone to hail a cab, but a priority notification at the top of the screen caught my eye.
I tapped it open.
It was a photo Cecilia had posted just moments ago.
The caption read: “Thanks to the boss for driving me home~”
The photo clearly showed a familiar center console.
Only two of this limited-edition model existed in the entire city, and one of them belonged to Julian.
Hanging above the console was the lucky charm I had prayed for at St. Mary’s Cathedral last year.
When I first hung it there, Julian had looked at it with disdain.
“This thing is so ugly. It doesn’t match my car at all.”
Only after I begged him repeatedly did he reluctantly agree to keep it.
Thinking of this, I suddenly felt a strange sense of release.
I tapped “Like” on the post.
Julian probably wasn’t coming.
The ride-hailing app showed over a hundred people in the queue ahead of me.
I looked down at myself-there wasn’t a dry patch left on me anyway.
So, I turned and walked toward the row of shared bikes.
When I got home, Julian hadn’t returned yet.
Although I quickly took a shower and took some Aspirin, I still felt a bit dizzy before going to bed.
In my daze, I was woken by the sound of the bedroom door opening.
It was Julian coming back.
Probably surprised that I hadn’t waited up for him and had gone to sleep alone, he walked to the bed and stood there.
I felt his gaze lingering on me, but I was feeling so terrible that I didn’t react.
A moment later, I heard his footsteps retreating, followed by the sound of water running in the bathroom.
The rhythmic noise was strangely hypnotic, and I drifted back into a heavy, uneasy sleep.
When the alarm blared the next morning, my head was still spinning.
My limbs felt like lead, and I couldn’t reach out to turn off the phone immediately.
Julian clicked his tongue in annoyance.
That sharp “Tsk” sound finally jolted me awake.
I had a high fever and a splitting headache, but I had to lead an important meeting today.
I had no choice but to drag my heavy body out of bed, wash up, and head to work.
When I arrived at the office, the colleague sitting next to me noticed my unnaturally flushed face.
She asked with concern, and immediately went to fetch me some fever medicine and an ice pack.
Just then, Julian sent a message:
[Are you mad?]
I stared at the screen, baffled.
[Then why didn’t you make breakfast?]
Since we got married, I had prepared breakfast every single day before work-even when we were in the middle of a cold war.
Yet, he had never eaten it once.
In my groggy, feverish state this morning, I had genuinely forgotten.
But his entitled tone-as if he were ordering a servant around-made me frown in disgust.
I typed out a brief reply:
[I forgot. Get something yourself.]
For the rest of the day, I buried myself in work and didn’t check my phone again.
It wasn’t until just before I clocked out that I saw a new message from Julian:
[I’m coming to pick you up.]
