He Chose His Bastard So I Took My Baby And Fled Chapter 01

The moment I confirmed the booking, I got a call from Bernard.
When I picked up, his casual voice came down the line.
“Ainy, something came up today. I won’t be home tonight.”
I reached up to touch the tiny needle marks on my face. For him, I’d endured countless beauty jabs.
All because he once told me, “Ainy, once a woman hits thirty, her skin starts to sag and wrinkle. I prefer that fresh, eighteen-year-old feel.”
I’d always been terrified of pain—hadn’t even pierced my ears before. But to please him, I submitted myself to endless sessions of discomfort.
Yet here he was, fathering a child behind my back.
“Fine,” I replied.
Hearing my calm response, he paused, uncharacteristically caught off guard.
Before he could say anything more, I hung up without a second thought.
Then, I sent him a photo of Lorraine Diaz, his mistress, along with a simple message: “See you at the courthouse.”
Within half an hour, Bernard was home.
Unlike the first time his affair was exposed, there was no trace of guilt or fear on his face.
He calmly lit a cigarette, then swung open the door behind him.
A small figure ran toward me.
“Mommy!”
I glared at Bernard, the words I’d prepared lodging in my throat like a stone.
He smirked, hoisting our son Kenneth Aston high into the air.
“Ken, how about we all go out as a family today?”
“Yay! Yay!”
I knew he was using Kenneth as leverage against me.
Five years ago, when Kenneth learned we were divorcing, he had a seizure.
He’d convulsed on the floor, yet even then, he clung to the hem of my dress.
“Mommy, please … don’t divorce … Daddy. I beg … you.”
My heart shattered into pieces, and in the end, I compromised for Kenneth’s sake.
But just as we were about to head out, Lorraine arrived with a little boy.
Her eyes were swollen and red as she held the boy’s hand.
Before I could say anything, she fell to her knees before me.
“Ainy, please give Berni back to me, okay? Today is Gerry’s birthday—he needs his daddy.”
Gerry Aston burst into wails. “I want Daddy! I want Daddy!”
Kenneth, whose hand was clasped in mine, went rigid, his face draining of color.
I turned to Bernard, catching a flicker of hesitation in his eyes.
My heart sank.
Just as I reached out to grab him, he strode to Lorraine’s side.
Then he said to me with an apologetic tone, “Today just won’t work. Let’s reschedule for another time.”
My mind went blank, a sharp buzz filling my ears.
After that fiasco five years ago, Kenneth became a joke at school.
Classmates whispered behind his back, jabbing fingers at him, calling him “bastard” and “fatherless kid.”
He’d spiraled into despair, nearly jumping off the building.
I’d collapsed on the ground and cried my eyes out to finally talk him out of it.
Afterward, Bernard sent over lavish jewelry and designer bags as some sort of apology.
But what good was all that wealth? The entire city knew it was bought with my dignity—and Kenneth’s.
“Bernard, if you walk away now, Kenneth and I are done with you for good.”
Meeting my bloodshot gaze, Bernard panicked.
But in the next instant, Lorraine scooped up Gerry and dashed toward the busy road.
“What’s the point of us living like a joke? We might as well die!”
Eyes wide with terror, Bernard shoved me aside and sprinted into the traffic after Lorraine.
I crumpled to the ground, my head slamming against the steps. Blood trickled down my forehead and stained my face.
Kenneth let out a piercing cry, then rushed to me with his jacket and pressed it desperately against my wound.
Then, he turned and chased after Bernard in a fury.
“Daddy, Mommy’s hurt! Take her to the hospital now!”
He tugged at Bernard’s arm, but Bernard’s face twisted with impatience, his arms wrapped protectively around Lorraine.
Suddenly, Gerry started crying again.
Lorraine held up Gerry’s hand, which was marked with red welts. Then she screamed at the frail little Kenneth in hysterics, “Why did you pinch him? He’s just a child! What do you and your mother want from us? If you have a problem, take it out on me!”
With that, she began slapping her own face.
Bernard looked heartbroken. In a flash of rage, he slapped Kenneth across the face.
“You’re just like your damn mother! I’ve spoiled you rotten!”
Then, he yanked out his phone. “IronCore Camp? Yeah, I’ve got a disobedient kid here. Come pick him up right now.”
