Kalau jaman sekarang dengan perkembangan teknologi informasi saja data bisa dipalsukan, apalagi jaman dulu semua dokumen bakar, saksi di bunuh, bersih jadinya... Buktnya terlihat seeprti pola masyarakat, ASN, aparat penagak hukum... Udah tradisi misalnya jendral X besok datang ke daerah anu, ntar daerah tersebut sibuk2 nyiapin acara, kontraktor kasih2 duit, hadiah, dsb

Indonesian dictator Suharto on his deathbed
By Thomas Bell, South East Asia Correspondent
12:01AM GMT 12 Jan 2008

General Suharto, the former dictator of Indonesia, appeared on the brink of death last night, after suffering multiple organ failure. His family was at his bedside in a Jakarta hospital where he was brought a week ago.

Suharto, 86, was forced to quit in 1998 in the face of mounting student protests, political chaos and economic crisis. He was charged with embezzling hundreds of millions of dollars of state funds, but the government later dropped the case due to his poor health. He and his family deny any wrongdoing.

He remained influential to the end. To his admirers Suharto was the "father of development" who oversaw the rapid industrialisation of his country. As a strong anti-Communist during the Cold War he enjoyed American support, but the stability he brought came at a terrible price for many Indonesians.

The ambitious military hardliner came to power following an alleged botched coup by Communists in 1965. In the purges that followed at least 500,000 people were executed by the army or butchered by militias.

It was, according to one CIA assessment, "one of the worst mass murders of the 20th century"

More violence was to follow. Under the pretext of anti-communism, Chinese Indonesians suffered massacres and persecution. In 1975 he annexed the former Portuguese colony of East Timor. About one third of the population -200 000 people- were killed.

The pattern had been set six years earlier when the Dutch colony of Western New Guinea joined Indonesia. In a political manoeuvre known as "The Act of Free Choice" 1022 local chiefs were gathered together by soldiers and told they would be massacred if they did not join Indonesia. They voted unanimously to do so.

It was typical of Suharto's style of "democracy". During his long rule he won 5 presidential elections unopposed.

In 1999 Time Magazine reported that the Surharto family had amassed US $15 bn in cash, shares, corporate assets, jewellery and fine art.

Others put the figure closer to US$35bn, including 40pc of the land in East Timor.

Transparency International said he had stolen more money than any other ruler in history. Yet the Indonesian economy prospered under his rule.

It was the collapse of the national currency following the Asian financial crisis that caused his downfall in 1988. He retreated to his Jakarta villa, rarely appearing in public.

A series of strokes and other ailments helped him evade repeated prosecution attempts, but some saw political influence in his apparent impunity from justice.

Last September he won USD128m from an Indonesian court in damages against Time Magazine over the corruption allegations, which he hotly denied. "At last I will be rich," he declared after the verdict, which Time is appealing.

In 2002 his son Tommy became the first member of the Suharto family to go to jail, for ordering the murder of a judge. He was sentenced to 15 years but released in 2006.

Outside the hospital on Friday night a small group of protesters delivered a bouquet of flowers wishing the General a speedy recovery and carried a banner reading "Put Suharto on trial." It seemed to be too late for that
