BREAKING: 19 people mowed down by car as 4x4 ploughs into tram stop in Melbourne

At least 19 people, including a preschool-aged child, have reportedly been hit, with their condition unclear at this stage.

Cops and paramedics are currently on the scene and the driver has been arrested, along with a second man.

Unconfirmed reports have said cops are treating it as terror-related after the 4x4 crashed into the tram stop near Flinders Street station in the Australian city.

Pictures from the scene show bodies strewn across the road, with witnesses describing people being thrown into the air as the car hit them.

A witness tweeted: "One of the police on the cordon on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Flinders Lane just told crowd there has been a terrorist incident".







Eyewitnesses have described people screaming and fleeing the scene in panic.

Lauren Lopatko tweeted: “Something just happened outside Elizabeth st tram stop outside Flinders St station. Avoid area if you can. I saw ppl screaming & smoke.”

Another woman, who was working nearby, told radio station 3AW she saw "people flying everywhere".

"We could hear this noise, as we looked left, we saw this white car, it just mowed everybody down," she said.

"People are flying everywhere. We heard thump, thump.

"People are running everywhere."



Footage shot minutes after the horrific incident shows Melbourne cops arresting a man.

Witnesses have reportedly said the driver appeared to be unconscious when he was pulled from the vehicle.

A spokesman for Ambulance Victoria said: “Three people have been taken to the Alfred. Three people have been taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

“A preschool-aged child with a head injury has been taken to Royal Children’s Hospital in a serious condition. There are no further details on injuries or conditions at this time.”
