****History of rail transport in China
The first railroad to operate commercially in China opened in Shanghai in July 1876. The railway, known as the Woosung Road, ran from the American Concession in the present-day Zhabei District to Woosung in the present-day Baoshan District and was built by the British trading firm
The British built the Shanghai-Nanjing Railway (1905-1908) and Kowloon-Canton Railway (completed 1911). The French built the Sino-Vietnamese Railway (1904–10), a 855 km 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) line to connect Kunming with Vietnam, then a colony of French Indochina. The Germans built the Jiaoji Railway in Shandong Province. British and German industrialists jointly built the Tianjin–Pukou Railway. The Americans built the Canton - Sam Shui Railway in Guangdong in 1902-04. Czarist Russia built the China Eastern Railway (1897-1901) as a shortcut for the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Southern Manchuria Railway to Port Arthur.
****St. Joseph's Institution
Prof Tan Chorh Chuan (Class of 1975)
President, National University of Singapore
Prof Tan Chorh Chuan (Class of 1975) had to make some difficult—but necessary—decisions. Professor Tan first heard his calling to the medical profession as a schoolboy at SJI, when, as a member of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, he helped resuscitate a footballer who had collapsed during a match. In recognition of his contributions to the management of SARS, Prof Tan received the Public Service Star in 2003 and the Public Administration Medal (Gold) Medal in 2004 for his work in the Ministry of Health.
Prof Tan: No. Although we are not Catholics, my mother had great faith in the education provided by mission schools. I studied at St Michael's Primary School (now St Joseph's Institution Junior), St Joseph's Institution and Catholic Junior College. These were at the insistence of my mother. As I have only attended mission schools, I cannot compare them with other schools. However, I greatly enjoyed my experience at St Joseph's Institution. I feel it is a school that develops students holistically.
A renal physician, he obtained his medical training at NUS, and research training at the Institute of Molecular Medicine, Oxford.
Prof Tan was previously a Commonwealth Medical Fellow, Wellcome Fellow, University of Oxford, and a Visiting Scholar to Wolfson College, Oxford. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Royal College of Physicians of London, the American College of Physicians, elected Fellow of the Polish Academy of Medicine and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, UK.

The colonial Hong Kongers shared British values and allowed Britain to expand its influence in southern China and consolidate its rule in Hong Kong. Indian businessman Sir Hormusjee Naorojee Mody learned of Lugard's plan and pledged to donate HK$150,000 towards the construction and HK$30,000 towards other costs. The Hong Kong Government and the business sector in southern China, which were both equally eager to learn "secrets of the West's success"
(referring to technological advances made since the Industrial Revolution), also gave their support.

Tsinghua University(abbreviated THU) is a research university located in Beijing, China, and one of the nine members in the elite C9 League of universities. Tsinghua was established in 1911 as "Tsinghua College," and renamed to "Tsinghua School" in 1912 and "National Tsinghua University" in the 1928
In the aftermath of the Boxer Rebellion, American Secretary of State John Hay suggested that the US $30 million plus Boxer indemnity paid by China to the United States was excessive.
After much negotiation with ambassador Liang Cheng, President Theodore Roosevelt obtained congressional approval in 1909 to reduce the Qing Dynasty indemnity payment by US$10.8 million, on the condition that these funds would be used as scholarships for Chinese students to study in the United States. Using this fund, the Tsinghua College was established in Beijing, on 29 April 1911 on the site of a former royal garden, to serve as a preparatory school for students to be sent by the government to study in the United States. .The faculty members for sciences were recruited by the YMCA from the United States and its graduates transferred directly to American schools as juniors upon graduation. In 1925, the school established its College Department and started its research institute on Chinese studies.

****The First Mental Hospital in China!!!
AFTER MORE THAN 25 YEARS of planning and fundraising, American medical missionaries
opened the first mental hospital in China in 1898. In 19th century China, the mentally ill were usually confined by their families in a dark room of the house, essentially neglected If left to wander in the streets, they were often mocked and laughed at, and sometimes stoned. If they did anything wrong, they could be arrested and thrown into prison. Because the mentally ill were largely invisible, some missionaries argued that mental illness was not as prevalent in China as in Europe or the United States. John G. Kerr, MD (1824–1901), an American Presbyterian medical missionary, disagreed—and he worked long and hard to change the treatment of the mentally ill.
