Swedish antitank missile system BILL 2
Swedish antitank missile system BILL 2
December 12, 2014

Spoiler for 13:

Antitank missile system BILL 2 is a further development of successful complex BILL (RBS56), which is used by the Swedish army in 1988, and by the Austrian and Brazilian Army. BILL 2 manufactured by Saab Bofors Dynamics (formerly Bofors Ordnance »), based in the Swedish city of Karlskoga. BILL complex 2 also is used by the Swedish army. Since the protection of military vehicles is constantly being improved, including dynamic protection, the company has improved its technology Bofors OTA (Overfly Top Attack - attack from above while flying over the target) for a missile BILL 2 and introduced a new tandem warhead. The complex BILL 2 also enhanced pointing accuracy due to the speed chart, which tracks the movement of the arrow while tracking. The main objective of the rocket - attack armored targets at the weakest point at the expense of the regime Overfly Top Attack (attack from above while flying over the target). However, thanks to three modes of firing the missile can also capture and destroy the hovering helicopter, lightly armored and unarmored targets and soft targets such as bunkers and machine gun nests.

Portable antitank missile system consists of a mass of 10.5 kg rocket, launch tube, tripod, day sight with increasing x7 and thermal sight.

Rocket

BILL ATGM 2 has a semi-automatic guidance system along the line of sight (SACLOS) with the transmission of commands by wire, which is more advanced compared to other guidance systems similar complexes. The shooter keeps the goal in the crosshairs of the night or day sight, and the trajectory of the rocket is monitored by a laser beacon in the back of the rocket. Proactive tracking algorithms are used to hold the rocket trajectory at the correct offset from selected to hit a target: 1.05 meters above the line of sight for armored and vulnerable targets and along the line of sight to unarmored targets. Signals are sent to the missile guidance along the wire. Warhead has optical and magnetic sensor. Optical (laser) sensor works as a rangefinder, measuring the height of the target by a missile, while analyzing the target. The magnetic sensor detects the distinguishing characteristics of a possible target to identify target corresponding to the preset algorithm, among other metallic objects. Algorithms recognize a tower or center of the target and determine the optimum position for the detonation of the warhead. The missile has inertial impact fuze for a direct attack, as well as remote (non-contact) fuse.

Spoiler for 10:

BILL 2 rocket complex has a new warhead consisting of two shaped charges. Charges triggered alternately over time when flying over a target missile, with a cumulative jet both charges fall into the same point. The first combat unit destroys armor units, and then the second jet stream falls into the "free pass" and breaks the basic body armor tank.

Missile system can affect both still and moving targets and has an effective range of 150 to 2,200 meters. At maximum range missile flight time is 13 seconds.

Spoiler for 9:

Firing modes

Before starting the rocket shooter can choose any of the following three modes of fire.

Basic Mode: missiles flying at a height of 1.05 meters above the line of sight and hit the target from above. All sensors (magnetic and optical) are activated, and the algorithms are optimized for a particular purpose.

Mode soft-skinned targets: the missile flies along the line of sight. All sensors are disabled. Selected percussion fuse.

Mode unprotected goal: the missile flies over the line of sight as the basic version. Activated by an optical sensor, a magnetic sensor is deactivated. To initiate the warhead uses a special algorithm. This mode can be adapted to the respective requirements.

Installation on vehicles

BILL ATGM 2 can be mounted on a variety of vehicles, wheeled and tracked combat vehicles. In 2000, the Office of military logistics Army issued Swedish company Saab Bofors contract for the manufacture of technological demonstrator BILL 2 mounted in a special tower BUA (Bill Under Armour) combat vehicle CV 9040. The tower housed a complex with three missiles, day and night sights . Launch was carried out using the remote control unit gunner seated inside the machine. If necessary, rocket and sights can be removed from the machine and mounted on a tripod.

M113 APCs type complex set using a special adapter without any significant technical changes machines

Production complex BILL 2 began in late 1998 and the first deliveries of the Swedish army began in 1999. After this set of the previous generation BILL 1 was discontinued. Currently, orders for ATRA BILL 2 no.
