ISTANBUL—The Western-backed Free Syrian Army clashed with al Qaeda fighters in towns throughout northern Syria on Friday, drawing support for the first time from Islamic militants also fighting the Assad regime.
The fighting marked the first major, sustained clashes between two Islamist rebel groups that were to be allied: al Qaeda's Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham, or ISIS, and the Islamic Front, a coalition of less-radical religious militias.
Just last month, the Islamic Front seized an FSA warehouse storing U.S. military gear. But Friday's fighting—pitting the Islamic Front and secular FSA against ISIS—signaled that alliances may be shifting.
Widespread public protests against ISIS on Friday also highlighted growing public resistance to the group whose mostly foreign fighters and heavy-handed tactics have stirred opposition among Syrians of all stripes
Syrian rebels say that the ISIS fighters have hijacked their revolution, moving in on territory the FSA won in hard-fought battles against government forces and kicking out the secular opposition. ISIS jails and even executes Syrians who oppose their rule and goal to create an Islamic state.
The shifting sentiment comes as the secular Syrian opposition, known as the Syrian Opposition Coalition, prepares to meet in Geneva this month in a bid to recapture waning international support.
Western capitals have grown lukewarm toward the coalition, which includes the Free Syrian Army, because of its infighting and lack of organization. More recently, they have begun to fear that al Qaeda is gaining ground in Syria at the FSA's expense.
A spokesman for the Syrian opposition said the FSA wasn't fighting the al Qaeda militants to respond to Western concerns, "but to defend the best interest of the revolution and the Syrian people."
"These fights are largely supported by the Syrian people and hopefully will put a stop to ISIS very soon," the spokesman said.
Yet the fighting is likely to be protracted and could also end up weakening both sides—to the benefit of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
The latest clashes were sparked Wednesday when ISIS killed a prominent rebel leader from Ahrar al Sham, one of seven religious militias in the Islamic Front.
The leader, Hussein Suleiman, was sent to mediate a dispute with ISIS. Instead, he was imprisoned for 20 days and tortured before being killed, according to on-the-ground activist accounts and opposition officials.
A video circulated online of Mr. Suleiman's body, with visible torture marks and one ear chopped off, further enraged Syrian rebels.
On Thursday, al Qaeda fighters moved against the FSA to take over al-Atareb, a town in the northwestern province of Aleppo, leading to fierce clashes that extended across Aleppo and the neighboring province Idlib.
The Islamic Front responded to the FSA's call for support on Friday, leading to the first significant head-on fighting between ISIS and other Islamist groups. ISIS has clashed with FSA rebels for months but steered clear of the better-funded and trained Islamic Front.
The public outcry against ISIS gained momentum after ISIS fighters allegedly opened fire on during peaceful marches against the group in Aleppo, Syria's largest city, and other northern towns Friday, according to activists. It wasn't known if anyone was hurt.
So far there hasn't been a reaction from al-Nusra Front, another al Qaeda affiliate that draws its ranks from Syrian recruits and opposes both ISIS' foreign makeup and it heavy-handed treatment of civilians.
"ISIS have been taking areas the [rebels] liberated one by one and rebels tried to avoid clashing with them because they were focusing on the battle with [the Syrian] regime," said Khaled, an activist in Western Aleppo. "But it was destiny that rebels would fight against ISIS."
Bonus bacotan ISIS vs FSA.
