MARDER and LEOPARD 2 are the main engines of armored brigades Chile

Currently one of the most modern and powerful land armies in Latin America is Chile's army, which has gone through a very important process of modernization.

Until the end of the 80s the Chilean army was mostly light weapons and is equipped with a small number of tanks AMX-30, M-41, M50 and M51 SHERMAN, which do not pose a real threat to Argentina and Peru (main rivals Chile), armed with tanks AMX13, Sk-105, T-55 and TAM. After the crisis in Argentina in 1978, which almost resulted in open war, in Chile understood the urgent need to modernize its Army.

Currently, the military is mainly focused on the protection of the northern (from Peru in the Atacama Desert, where the plain stretching from the Pacific Ocean and to the Cordillera) and the southern tip of the country. Even in the absence of friction with Argentina Chilean army keeps a large contingent out there - fifth Army Division in Punta Arenas.

After the reorganization of troops in 2008-2009 were formed two armored brigades: 1st Armoured Brigade Coraceros in Arica and 2nd Armoured Brigade Cazadores in Iquique. Both are part of the six divisions - the most modern units, which also includes two reinforced Regiment (communication and supply). Shortly thereafter, on the basis of the 20th Regiment was created enhanced 3rd Brigade La Conception as part of the first division in Antofagasta, while a part of this division includes two reinforced Regiment (Infantry and supply). In 2009, in Punta Arenas and in the fifth division was formed the fourth armored brigade, composed of three reinforced regiments and one regiment of supply. The second motorized infantry division and fourth army division with headquarters in Santiago and Koyhaike and third Mountain Division in Valdivia, covering the middle part of the country do not have in their composition brigades or armored divisions. It has three reinforced regiments, two infantry, one armored reconnaissance, one artillery, one connection and one regiment of supply. Fourth Division has one reinforced regiment, one artillery, one engineer regiment and a company of supply. Also worth Peldehu Special Operations Brigade in Rancagua, and Lautaro Brigade Army Aviation. Some time ago, discussed plans for a airmobile brigade with the intention of buying COUGAR helicopters and attack helicopters (the most likely choice Airbus Helicopter TIGER).

New weapons

In the last few years have been upgraded light vehicles. Were purchased new trucks, for example UNIMOG 1300L ATEGO and from Mercedes Benz, as well as jeeps HMIMWV M1097, M998, M1114 and M1025 (with 55 launchers ATGM SPIKE). In addition, 169 armored vehicles AIFV-B were purchased from Belgium in 2005, followed by another batch of 139 cars YPR-765, which are the same machine, just purchased from the Netherlands.

Also in service are about 500 APC M113, including command vehicles M577, M548 personnel transporters and M106 mortars of different origin, such as variant M548 from Italy and 22 M113A2 machines from Germany for medical evacuation. In order to replenish the fleet of armored vehicles in 2008, the German army had been ordered 112 BMP MARDER, then in 2009 was bought by the second batch of 100 cars MARDER 1A3, of which the last 28 pieces arrived in early 2013. A total of 200 cars were put into service, and the rest went to the spare parts.

Chilean self-propelled howitzer M109

To replace the obsolete tanks SHERMAN and M41 were ordered 200 tanks LEOPARD 1V of the stocks of the German army. They arrived in Chile in 1999 without any repairs, and as a result only 100 cars entered operation, adding quickly reduces the number of suitable tanks after 2005. To replace these machines and the remaining tanks AMX 30 was ordered 118 tanks LEOPARD 2A4, 93 of which came into operation on 12 dozer blades were installed, and the rest went to the spare parts. With the arrival of the last 2A4 tanks in early 2013 the first 24 tank LEOPARD 1V been formally charged. By the end of 2012 the entire operation was 40 tanks LEOPARD 1V. In 2013, there are only 20 pieces. Currently, the Chilean army examines the possibility of buying 92 tanks LEOPARD 2A5N6 of the Dutch army reserves, negotiations which have been conducted since the end of 2012.

A small party of four machines GEPARD A1 was obtained from the German army during the second half of 2008, out of order with a total of 30 pieces. But they were in such poor condition that were returned in September 2009.

In order to increase opportunities for artillery and replacement of obsolete machines were ordered MkF3 24 self-propelled howitzers M109 KAWEST of reserves Switzerland, upgraded by RUAG. 12 howitzer M109A3 and M109A5 12 were purchased from the US Army and modernized company BAE Systems, was first produced in 2006 and the second in 2012-2013. Currently, the only self-propelled artillery in the country. Future plans include the purchase of another batch of 24 systems in Switzerland. Towed artillery consists of 40 155-mm guns Soltam M68 / M71, M101 and outdated 89 104 105-mm guns Oto Melara M56.
