Britain Urges India To Acquire Eurofighter
TodayWorldJuly 10, 2014

British Foreign Secretary William Hague, who concluded his two-day India visit on Wednesday, informed the top Indian leadership that London was ready to supply Eurofighter military aircraft to the South Asian country.

He lobbied the Narendra Modi government to purchase the Eurofighter jets from the UK, suggesting that those would be far better compared to combat jets manufactured by France’s Rafale. During his meeting with the Indian premier, the British official said that London has welcomed the newly-elected government’s move to boost jobs, upgrade infrastructure and reinforce the Indian armed forces. He also advised Modi to replace the outdated Soviet origin defence equipment with modern weapons.

Later, Hague told the local media in New Delhi: “We have always had a strong belief in the capabilities of the Eurofighter and its potential. It’s always available to those countries that are able and willing to purchase it.” He made the comment in the presence of British Finance Minister George Osborne. However, Hague refused to make comments on the stalled deal between India and France to purchase 126 Rafale jets from Dassault Aviation, saying: “We respect the process that is followed in India.” He also rejected the view that there was a contradiction between seeking to sell weapons to India and celebrating its best known pacifist. “We are dealing with the Indian government. We are not imposing anything on anybody. Of course friendly countries that wish to buy things from the UK, they are able in compliance with our laws and regulations to buy those things. There is no moral conflict,” added the visiting British official.

Meanwhile, senior spokesperson of the Indian External Affairs Ministry Syed Akbaruddin stressed: “The UK foreign secretary did indicate the technological advantages of the product that they have available.” The spokesperson told reporters that leaders of the two countries discussed various issues related to civil nuclear co-operation, extradition and bilateral trade ties. According to the spokesperson, Osborne assured the Indian leadership that Britain would open a GBP 1 billion credit line to invest in Indian infrastructure.

Akbaruddin informed the media that New Delhi and London agreed to launch negotiations for civil nuclear co-operation soon. During their meeting, Hague and Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj also decided to strengthen bilateral trade and business ties in the coming days. According to Swaraj, India badly requires foreign investment to boost its industrial sector and it is ready to welcome British investors. Commenting on the issue, spokesperson of the Indian ministry said: “The meeting started on a good note with Swaraj thanking the British minister for London’s decision to install Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in Parliament Square in the British capital by early next year. The discussions were wide-ranging and extensive and they covered a broad canvas in terms of variety of issues. They started with discussions on economic ties because these are very robust and there is a great expectation from the UK that these will be moving to the next level.” Currently, the volume of two-way trade between India and the UK stands at USD 15 billion.
