Cyprus and Israel share a common interest in the security of maritime areas of mineral deposits throughout the Eastern Mediterranean, and therefore strengthen military cooperation through a series of air and naval exercises held in the southern coast of the island. Relations between Israel, Cyprus and Greece have warmed since 2008, since the close relationship between Israel and Turkey have deteriorated due to the coming to power in Turkey, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
According to Cyprus Defense Minister Fotis Fotiou (Fotis Fotiou), Cyprus-Israeli relations are entering a new phase. "I am confident that the strategic dialogue that began several months ago, will benefit both countries and will continue in all directions, including energy security," - said the local press during a visit Fotiou bilateral exercises with the Israeli Air Force, held in Cyprus in early this month.

According to Cypriot sources, exercise involved 32 Israeli fighter planes and six support, including F-15 and F-16. Exercises included simulated attacks on targets on land and at sea along the southern coast of the island from Limassol to Paphos. Cypriot side played the role of the defending side, using its air defense system.
In recent years, Cyprus has created an impressive defense system based in an advantageous manner by the Russian-made anti-aircraft missile systems (AAMS). In 1997 Cyprus gained an early version of the Russian S-300 (PMU1). The battery comprises 12 mobile launchers, as well as the command post with radar detection. Purchase of S-300 in the 1998th year sparked missile crisis between Cyprus and Turkey, which led to the transfer of this system of Greece. Today Cyprus S-300 is not deployed on the island of Crete and under Greek control. In December of 2013 the Greek defense forces carried out the first launch of S-300 missiles during military exercises operational "White Eagle".
Previous exercises Cyprus and Israel took place in April 2013. Then to the south of the island naval forces of the two countries practiced interaction in search and rescue at sea.
