Saudi Arabia Faces Blowbacks of Supporting Extremism

TEHRAN (FNA)- Measures of the House of Saud in sponsoring extremists in other Middle East countries such as Syria and fueling sectarian war will have serious consequences for themselves, although the officials think that geographical distance may preserve them, a report said.

Brian M. Downing in an article for Iran Review said that these policies of Saudi Arabia for supporting anti-Shiite militants in the region definitely will have consequences for that country and its fragile internal security.

He said that ten percent of the Saudi population is consisted of Shiite groups which mostly are residents of oil-rich eastern regions and at the same time are deprived of education and employment opportunities.

“They now see their brethren abroad killed in the thousands from their government’s actions. Attempts to preempt such opposition through oppression and deportation will only deepen Shia hostility and make an insurgency all the more likely,” he underlined.

Secondly, he added that such actions may persuade the young generation who is in favor of a liberal government, to do more aggressive actions for toppling the Saudi Kingdom.

Downing also said that the recent efforts of Saudi officials for cooperating with Israel to attack Iran will enrage the pious Saudis.

“Danger stems from three conservative groups: Wahhabi clerics who oppose the government’s reforms (limited though they are), tribes on the periphery ever suspicious of urban elites, and returning jihadists who see the faith and determination they displayed in battle lacking in the political elite.”

The Pakistani government has long encouraged Sunni extremism to fight foreign enemies and now faces a fearsome blowback as their students attack their teachers and benefactors. The Saudis may soon face similar blowback.
On November 17, the British newspaper, Sunday Times, reported that Riyadh has given the go-ahead for Israeli planes to use its airspace for possible attacks on Iran over Tehran’s nuclear energy program.

Riyadh denied the Saudi-Israeli cooperation in preparation for an attack on Iran's nuclear program.

On November 24, Iran and the six world powers (the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany) sealed an interim deal to pave the way for the full resolution of the West’s decade-old dispute with Iran over its nuclear energy program.

However Israel slammed the agreement, with Netanyahu describing it as a "historic mistake".
