At least 14,000 more handguns have been bought by the Philippine National Police (PNP) using the savings from the P1.2 billion gun deal last year.

Supt. Alladin Collado, chief of the Supply and Management Division of the Directorate for Logistics, said the procurement was done through what he termed as repeat order of Glock 17 Gen4s, the same brand that the PNP bought during last year's biggest gun deal entered into by the police.

A total of P1.2 billion was allocated for the purchase of some 60,000 pieces of handguns but the PNP had saved some P200 million after the winning bidder pegged the price at some P998 million.

"The fund used for the purchase of the additional firearms was that savings," said Collado in a press briefing at Camp Crame in Quezon City.

The Glock 17 Gen4 has a market price of more or less P40,000 but the PNP only bought it at a price of some P16,000 each.

This is the reason why the PNP was able to buy another 14,000 pieces of Glock pistols, according to Collado.

So far, a total of 37,578 pieces of Glock pistols have been delivered to the PNP, a total of 22,603, which represent the first two batches of the delivered guns, are due for distribution next week.

The third tranche of handguns that were already delivered are due for examinations while the rest are yet to be delivered.

"The priority areas for distributions are highly-urbanized areas and tourist spots," said Collado.
Also included in the priority distribution plan, according to him, are the cities and first class municipalities.

Should all the ordered handguns are delivered and distributed, there would be no more gunless policemen according to Collado.

In fact, he said there will be some extra guns since only 73,000 have no issued handguns.
But he said the procurement process for more guns will be updated from time to time due to the annual recruitment program in the PNP.

Aside from the handguns, the PNP is also planning to buy some P2 billion worth of patrol cars this
