Members of the Vivian United Pentecostal Church were shocked to discover one of their own started the fire that destroyed their sanctuary and left them devastated.

"It was very heartbreaking," Dorothy Whately said. "We just couldn't imagine what could've set the fire because we had just totally remodeled everything in the church."

Whately and her husband arrived at the church shortly after the fire and witnessed the devastation. Part of Sunday's service was about forgiving William Sexton for that blaze. Whately says she does.

"We definitely forgive," she said. "We really pray for his family, his wife and his children."

She and others were surprised to learn police arrested Sexton as the arsonist. Steven Tolbert said he didn't see it coming.

"Not at all," Tolbert said. "For the past few weeks he did kind of, he started to act a little weird. I would've never thought he'd done what he did."

Tolbert says his brother was friends with Sexton for years and that the fire, police say Sexton ignited, has only made his church stronger. He believes things are well.

"Amazingly well," Tolbert. "We've been having great church lately. I would say our church has grown through this a lot."

Church officials say repairs and renovations have began in their building and should be done in about 6 months. Authorities also say Sexton knew the church was occupied when he set the fire. He's being charged with aggravated arson.
