MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. - Five students from Community School in Martin County have been arrested in connection with the sale of stolen guns on the private school campus, the Martin County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.
The sheriff's office said their investigation began in mid-May after a tip that two students may have brought guns to school to be sold.
Investigators went to the school and following several interviews, determined that one student had burglarized a home on six different occasions and stole five weapons from a safe.
Detectives also say they determined that four other students were involved in the sale of the weapons along with hundreds of rounds of ammunition both on and off school grounds.
The sheriff's office arrested all five students who range in age from 15 to 17.
Investigators say they recovered all the weapons.
The sheriff's office identified the stolen guns as a Kimber-1911 .45 ACP semi-automatic handgun, Smith and Wesson 9mm semi-automatic handgun, FN FNP 9mm semi-automatic handgun, Ruger .357 magnum revolver, and a Glock 30 .45 ACP semi-automatic handgun.
The school released a statement late this afternoon that said in part, "As soon as Community Academy became aware of the full extent of a very serious situation involving students at the school, the Martin County Sheriff's Office was notified.
It went on to say, "God's provision for exposure of and safety during this serious incident is recognized as the key element for assuring the safety of our students and campus throughout this time."
It concluded that they are praying for families who have been affected by this.
