KHULNA, MAY 6: The second warship ‘Surma’ built by Bangladesh was launched by Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral M Farid Habib in a ceremony at Khulna Shipyard on Monday, says a press release issued by PID, Khulna.
Managing Director of Khulna Shipyard Commodore Riyaz Uddin Ahmed presided over the function. Vice Admiral M Farid Habib formally received the vessel from the shipyard authorities at Rupsha River adjacent to the shipyard. The ship is built with local technology. Officials said building of a patrol craft locally costs Tk 540 million as opposed to its import cost of Tk one billion. Addressing the ceremony as chief guest Vice Admiral Farid Habib said, “Resolution of dispute between Bangladesh and Myanmar has increased the span of our water territory.” He said with increasing demand for ships in the global market, Khulna Shipyard will hopefully be able to construct and export more ships with assistance of friendly nation China. Soon these home-built warships will be exported to foreign buyers, the Navy chief said. The warship was solely built using Khulna shipyard’s manpower for Bangladesh Navy can travel up to 23 nautical miles per hour.

The 50.4-metre long, 7.5-metre wide and 4.1-metre tall warship can travel up to 23 nautical miles per hour.The ship, armed with two 37 millimetre cannons and two 20 millimetre anti-aircraft guns and can continuously sail for seven days.
