BANGKOK, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Thirteen Myanmar soldiers were killed near Thai border after clashing with an unidentified armed group, Thai army officials said.

Army Spokesman Col. Sansern Kaewkamnerd told Xinhua on Friday that the Myanmar authority has contacted Thai authority over the incident in Myanmar territory near western border province of Ranong of Thailand.

The clash took place about 5 to 6 km away from the Thai border.

The Thai authority is now investigating whether a group of Thai people who illegally entered Myanmar border previously was involved in the incident.

The clash occurred as the Myanmar troops were patrolling the border in the area where 92 Thais were arrested in August last year for encroaching on Myanmar territory, Bangkok Post online reported.
