The Antonov An-140 is a turboprop regional airliner, designed by the Ukrainian Antonov ASTC bureau. It first flew on September 17, 1997. Apart from the main production line in Kharkiv by KSAMC, the aircraft is being manufactured in Russia, and under licence by HESA in Iran (as the IR.AN-140 or Iran-140), and it may also begin production in Kazakhstan.[1] It can carry a maximum of 52 passengers.

TEHRAN, Iran -- The sanctions imposed by the West on Iran will leave no impact on Iran-Ukraine joint production of Antonov-158 passenger planes, a senior Ukrainian diplomat said on Saturday.

"Sanctions have no impacts on Iran-Ukraine cooperation in building Antonov-158 planes," Ukraine's Ambassador to Tehran Alexander Samaraski told FNA on Saturday.

Iran aims to fly its first Antonov-158 jointly built with the Ukrainian company as early as 2013.

The new air vehicle with a seating capacity of 100 passengers will be the next generation of Iran-140 airplane.

After purchasing the production license for the Antonov-140 from Ukraine in 2000, Iran built its first Iran-140 passenger plane in 2003.

The first IRAN-140 aircraft was introduced by Iran in 2003.

Five domestically-manufactured IRAN-140 planes were completed in October 2008 to increase the country's transportation capacity and upgrade the Iranian passenger fleet.

The IRAN-140 is a double-engine turboprop aircraft which can fly almost 1,865 miles before re-fuelling and its passenger model seats 52 people.

The two nations signed a 20-year master contract in September 2011, which stipulates delivery of 16 An-158s to Iran, followed by assembly of another 64 aircraft on Iranian territory. Each An-148/158 is equipped with two D-436-148 engines and one auxiliary power unit AI-450-МS produced by Motor Sich (MSICH UK), Concorde Capital reported yesterday.

Concorde analyst Roman Dmytrenko added: “Production of each An-148/158 generates about USD 4.5 mln of revenue for Motor Sich from engine delivery and accounts for 0.5% of the company’s estimated 2012 sales. Both Russian VASO and Ukrainian Antonov produced only 4 An-148/158 aircraft this year, which is way below Motor Sich’s engine delivery capacity. In this respect, the establishment of a third manufacturer would significantly intensify An-148/158 production and drive demand for Motor Sich engines.”

According to Internet sources, the development of the plane was started in the 1990s, and the maiden flight took place on 17 December 2004. The plane completed its certification programme on 26 February 2007. The An-148 has a maximum range of 2,100–4,400 kilometers and is able to carry 68–99 passengers, depending on the configuration. The An-158 is a stretched fuselage version of the aircraft for 99 passengers
