Saudi Arabia wants to buy German tanks again
Saudi Arabia has been renewed interest in German armaments. After SPIEGEL information will buy the land hundreds of armored transport model "Boxer". Riyadh had recently made a request for Leopard main battle tank.
Hamburg - Saudi Arabia has an official inquiry in Germany because of the purchase of several hundred Radpanzern model "Boxer" for the Royal Guard. SPIEGEL information after the concern was negotiated last Monday at the secret meeting of the Federal Security. The "Boxer" is one of the most advanced combat vehicles in the world and is used by the Bundeswehr in Afghanistan as an armored troop carrier.
With the wheeled tank the Royal Guard would be upgraded to the most modern international standards. The "Boxer" is roadworthy and suitable for counter-insurgency. The Federal Security Council postponed the decision on the request for the coming year. The decision on the supply of main battle tanks of the "Leopard 2" is still pending. Saudi Arabia had made a request for the delivery of several hundred copies and thus triggered a heated debate in Germany . The more than 60-ton "Leopard 2" is considered one of the most powerful tanks in the world.
Genscher urges restraint
Former German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher (FDP) criticized the liberal German defense policy: "The German restraint in arms export policy has also turned out in retrospect to be correct, and you should stick to it," said Genscher told SPIEGEL.
For 2012, the federal government has not published any figures on arms exports. However, by November, six export credit guarantees have been released, with those arms deals with emerging markets generally are guaranteed by the State. The value of the guarantees is nearly 3.3 billion euros. These are based on calculations by the left-parliamentarian Jan van Aken already more than 800 million euros in 2011.
Politically sensitive in this context are the guarantees for Egypt over 700 million euros and 405 million over Israel. In both countries, the guarantees securing the purchase of submarines, which are built by HDW in Kiel.
