Influenced heavily by the music of artists such as the Rolling Stones and Janis Joplin, blues/rock artist Superfly has been making western music of the 60s and 70s popular in 21st century Japan through both their music and hippie-inspired fashion. Vocalist Shiho Ochi and guitarist Koichi Tabo met in 2003 in a music-related student "circle" at university in Aichi prefecture, forming a cover band shortly thereafter. In 2004, the duo changed their name to Superfly, after the Curtis Mayfield hit, and began creating original blues songs. The duo moved to Tokyo in 2005 in order to pursue music full time. An early break for Superfly was landing an opening slot for American singer India.Arie. The group landed a recording contract with Warner Music Japan, and released their debut single "Hello, Hello" in April 2007. The b-side was a surprisingly strong remake of the Humble Pie song “Hot & Nasty”, a rocking number first released before the members were born. Two days after the single's release they appeared on Asahi’s TV ‘s special Young Guns Spring Fest '07. The single was relatively successful, reaching #31 in the Oricon chart, and received a great amount of airtime on FM radio stations nationwide. Shortly thereafter, the group recorded a live performance at Apple’s Shibuya store, and released a four song digital EP Live From Tokyo , with all tracks being covers of 60’s and 70’s songs, with their version of the Eagles “Desperado” becoming the most popular of the bunch. Their second single, "Manifest," was released in August 2007, and featured Shiho Ochi on blues harmonica. The song charted but did not do as well as their debut. Soon after this Tabo announced that he would be leaving the duo in the capacity of performer and lead guitarist and assuming the role of composer/arranger, making Superfly and Ochi a solo act as of early November 2007. In December, Ochi went on her first tour nationwide as a solo artist, Superfly 2007: Hellow, We Love You, selling out all five performances. For Superfly’s third single, and Ochi’s first single as a soloist , Ochi collaborated with Australian rock band Jet on "i spy i spy," which was used in a commercial for Nissan CUBE automobiles, and became another chart hit. Superfly’s fourth single “Ai wo Komete Hanataba wo” followed in February 2008 and became their biggest hit to date. The fifth Superfly single “Hi-Five” was released in April, and despite being used in a phone company’s TV ad only did moderately well. Given this, many people were surprised when Superfly’s debut album blasted into the charts at #1 the following month. To promote the album, Superfly performed a free concert in Yoyogi Park on the same day as the album's release, and then launched a national tour in June. Now a solid star, Superfly continues to release and tour.
