Angels and Airwaves dibentuk Tom pada masa - masa kevakuman Blink di 2005. Tom mengajak salah satu temannya yang pernah membantunya dalam menggarap Box Car Racer yaitu David Kennedy, serta mengajak ex-Distillers bassist Ryan Sinn dan drummernya Offspring, Atom Willard. Salah satu komentar Tom mengenai band barunya ini adalah Just before all the blink-182 stuff happened when we were in Europe, I had a really weird epiphany. My heart was beating about a hundred miles a minute for three weeks straight and it had never happened to me before in my life. I really felt like Id been touched by something and I felt I was meant to do something massive. Album mereka We Dont Need to Whisper rillis 23 mei 2006, dengan first singlenya The Adventure, Angels and Airwaves akan lebih rock and roll daripada Blink 182, sepeti yang disebut Tom the greatest rockn'roll revolution of this generation and more emotional than Blink 182 and Box Car Racer put together.

Angels & Airwaves is the brainchild of Tom DeLonge, which came to fruition during the extended hiatus of blink-182. With lofty aspirations to transcend the limitations of the pop-punk genre of blink-182, the new band released their debut album We Don't Need to Whisper in 2006. It sold well though the critical reception was mixed. The concept, finding love in the middle of a war zone, was continued to the next album I-Empire (2007), which also reached the US Billboard top ten. A companion sci-fi film is planned for release during 2008.

Album produksi dimulai pada bulan Januari 2009, setelah tur bersama Weezer pada musim gugur 2008. Produksi berjalan sangat lambat sebagai DeLonge sedang pergi tur dengan Blink-182. DeLonge telah membandingkan album space rock yang dipengaruhi oleh U2 dan Pink Floyd.

Pada halaman Facebook mereka, band ini menyatakan bahwa pada Januari 4, mereka kembali ke studio untuk menempatkan sentuhan akhir pada album LOVE waktu untuk Februari 14 rilis.

Pada tanggal 12 Januari 2010, band ini merilis sebuah promosi video berjudul "C: \ Transmission_Love", yang berisi preview singkat lagu yang akan datang.

Pada bulan Mei 2009, diumumkan bahwa album ini akan dirilis pada Hari Natal. Namun, pada 19 Juli 2009, DeLonge mengumumkan melalui Modlife bahwa album ini tidak akan dirilis pada hari Natal seperti direncanakan sebelumnya, dan sebaliknya akan dirilis pada Hari Valentine.Album ini akan dirilis secara gratis melalui Modlife pada Hari Valentine 2010.

Free download dari album akan berisi sebelas lagu, tapi salinan fisik album tersebut juga akan dirilis yang akan berisi sebelas lagu yang sama bersama-sama dengan 30 menit dari ekstra musik dari film Love. Musik ekstra semua akan mengalir bersama. Tom DeLonge juga menunjukkan bahwa akan ada edisi deluxe dari album dengan bonus lebih bahan; sebuah tanggal rilis ini belum diumumkan.

Single pertama dari album, "Hallucination" dirilis secara gratis pada 23 Desember 2009. Tom DeLonge telah mengatakan bahwa ada sebuah video musik dalam karya-karya untuk lagu.

Fuel TV telah mengumumkan bahwa mereka akan merilis album penuh pada tanggal 12 Februari pada pukul 6 sore Pacific Time secara gratis. Lebih jauh lagi, sebuah remix Hallucination oleh Mark Hoppus akan tersedia bagi semua orang yang menyumbangkan uang saat men-download Love dari Modlife.
