Motorola merupakan brand telekomunikasi ternama yang berasal dari Amerika Serikat yang didirikan pada tahun 1928. Motorola dikenal sebagai perusahaan yang pertama kali menciptakan perangkat telepon bergerak ( handphone ) komersial pertama di dunia dengan productnya yang bernama DynaTAc 8000X di tahun 1983. Dalam perjalanannya Motorola meraih kesuksesan dengan penjualan Motorola RAZR series yang terjual 130 juta unit di seluruh dunia yang menjadikannya sebagai salah satu handphone terlaris sepanjang masa.
Pada tahun 2011, Motorola membagi dua divisinya menjadi Motorola Solutions dan Motorola Mobility. Tujuh bulan setelah pemisahan divisi tersebut, Google membeli divisi Motorola Mobility sebesar USD 12.5 Miliar. Dalam perjalananya Motorola telah mengembangkan berbagai macam brand android dibawah naungan Google seperti Moto E, Moto G, dan Moto X
Di bulan Januari 2014, Lenovo menandatangani kesepakatan dengan Google untuk membeli Motorola Mobility dengan harga USD 2.91 miliar atau setara Rp 35,4 triliun.Lenovo hanya membeli divisi perangkat Motorola saja. Pembelian tersebut tak termasuk divisi grup Advanced Technology and Projects Motorola. Divisi grup tersebut bertanggung jawab terhadap pengerjaan Project Ara, sekuriti tato, dan sensor bioteknologi.
Dengan pembelian ini, Lenovo resmi mendapatkan merek dagang dan berbagai produk Motorola, termasuk smartphone Moto X dan Moto G serta Lebih dari 2.000 paten dan portopolio merek dagang Motorola pun akan diambil alih oleh Lenovo
