Bikinis, beer and beauties: Stunning photos reveal Iran before Islamic Republic

STUNNING photos reveal what Iran looked liked before it became an Islamic Republic in the 1979 revolution.

The pictures reveal a country that was very Westernised, with women wearing bikinis, people drinking alcohol and both sexes happily socialising together.

Iran has been an Islamic Republic for under 40 years when a student-led revolution led to the fall of the US-backed Shah of Iran.



King Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was ousted to make way for Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini – something that would utterly transform the country.

A very conservative Islamic regime was immediately installed and life changed for all its citizens.

Women were immediately required to cover their heads and wear loose-fitting clothing.



Mosque-based committees started patrolling the streets to make sure the strict dress-code was enforced and rights of citizens were severely restricted.

A mass exodus of intellectuals and Western-educated elites occurred as all signs of Western cultural influence were stamped out.

But the Islamic Republic could now be crumbling.



The protests that have spread across cities and towns over the last few days were sparked over widespread dissatisfaction over unemployment and food prices.

But these quickly spiralled into massive demonstrations as citizens call for the collapse of the hardline regime.

The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), which is the largest and most active opposition movement, has called for an outright revolution.

It comes as protesters continue to take to the streets, with chants such as “Khamenei is a murderer, and his rule is illegitimate” and “Death to the dictator” heard.
