Vessel enhances the coast guard's ability to maintain distant, persistent patrols
South Korea's Coast Guard (KCG), now a part of Ministry of Public Safety and Security, announced that its largest offshore patrol vessel (OPV), Lee Chung-ho (pennant 5002), was officially inducted into service on 27 May 2016 followed by its commissioning ceremony on 30 May 2016 at Seogwipo Coast Guard Station in Jeju Island.

KCG says it is now better equipped to maintain persistent offshore patrols in policing Korea's exclusive economic zone (EEZ), particularly against illegal fishing. The ship will deploy on its first operational patrol mission in early June.

The decision to build the ship was taken five years ago with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) undertaking the basic design of the ship from May 2012 until November 2012. This was followed by contract signing for the ship's construction on 12 Dec 2012 at a value of some KRW78.5 billion (USD65 million). Built at HHI Ulsan, ship launching took place on 3 Dec 2015 and the ship was completed on 11 April 2016.

Lee Chung-ho joins an older ship, Sambong-ho (pennant 5001) - also built by HHI, that entered service in 2002.

While both ships are classed as 5,000-tonne ships by the KCG, the new ship is 4 m longer, displaces 150 tonnes more, is 3 kt faster in terms of maximum speed, and has longer reach by 500 nm. Lee Chung-ho has a length of 150.5 m, a beam of 16.5 m, a loaded displacement of 6500 tonnes and a complement of 104 persons, although 140 persons can be embarked.

The hybrid propulsion system has four MTU 20V1163M94 diesels (each rated at 9,900 bhp) and two 750KW electric motors that are connected to the propellers.
