Randall lived in Hope, British Columbia as a Park Warden with his wife Shannon and their daughter Lydia . It all started when he heard about the problems in the country. Finally, the city was attacked by zombies (called shadows ). When it happened, he ran to the house to protect his family. It turned out that he had only two shotgun shells. His wife asked him to shoot her and Lydia, and so he did. He blocked that memory from his head. Later Randall meets Ben , Sam , Stella and Karla - survivors and his future friends. To survive, they had to collect suppiles.
After some time, he kills Karla because of her many bites. The shots drew the Shadows' attention toward the hideout. Everyone agrees to go to a Safe Zone. However, the ladder breaks and Randall begins his solo journey through the game.
Story
Spoiler for Story:
The story of the game takes place in 1986 in Seattle after the decimation of society following the outbreak of a virus that reanimates the dead. Randall Wayne is a survivor of the event and has since been separated from his family of his wife, Shannon, and daughter Lydia. Randall had joined a pack of survivors formed of his friend Ben, an officer named Sam and two sisters, Stella and Karla. Randall is seen killing Karla in the beginning of the game due to her being bitten and infected. When the others return and confront him, "Shadows", the term for the undead, struggle to get inside their room. The others are able to get away through a vent but Randall gets stuck in the room and tells them to get to a safe area aptly called the "Safe Point". Randall is able to escape the area alive and begin traversing the dilapidated Seattle world.
As Randall continues to make it through the fallen city, he learns of a reckless and violent militia known as "The New Law" that has started to fend for itself by using any means possible. Randall later finds a dying Sam who is bleeding to death after being ambushed by The New Law, who are proven to be malicious and only caring for themselves, making a false hope "Safe Point" actually a trap for other survivors. Knowing the safe point can hold his family and the other survivors, Randall decides to head over there to rescue them. He continues to travel to the safe point but while running away from the Shadows, he is cornered. Before they can reach him, a mysterious hand comes from a man hole and drags Randall down. Randall begins to have strange dreams and flashbacks at life before and at the exact point of the aftermath that started the virus. Randall meets the "Rat"; a strange sewer dweller that has made the sewers his home and occupied it with booby traps to kill the Shadows. Randall is forced to make it through the Rat's labyrinth in the sewers without his equipment. When Randall successfully makes it through the Rat notices his teenage son has disappeared to the surface to see his old home. The Rat promises Randall that he will search for his wife and daughter if he can find the teenager.
Gameplay
Spoiler for Gameplay:
One of the main factors as to why you feel so useless and under-prepared is the lack of ammo. Deadlight is not a 'kill one hundred zombies and you win' kind of game. Your goal is to navigate Randall Wayne across streets, rooftops and underground refuges without incident. Again, Wayne is a nobody, he can't magically jump ten feet into the air to avoid zombies, ammo is sparse, and running and swinging weapons takes its toll. If you see a zombie, you could try and kill it, but that would be a last resort. Zombies react to sound, so even though shooting one is the easy thing to do, it is oft the most dangerous. Attacking them head on could result in you being surrounded and before you know it, you're on the ground getting assaulted by a herd of zombies.
If you see a zombie, a headshot will put them down, but in Deadlight, your brain is the greatest weapon you can have. There are numerous ways of getting past herds. The most satisfying are ones that use your surroundings. At one point I found that the floor in front of me had been covered by a makeshift wooden walkway. With enough weight, it'd krack and collapse in on itself. So with a quick whistle, and a few shouts, I lure the zombies over and rejoice as they plummet into a self-confined pit.
.
Pro Tip: Braun can kill a single zombie, brains kill the herd
