Military: Syrian, Greek fighter jets harass Turkish aircraft

A Turkish aircraft that was conducting a reconnaissance flight over Aegean international airspace was put under radar lock by Greek F-16s, while a Turkish Air Force F-16 on patrol duty over the Syria-Turkey border area was also put under radar lock.

The Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) announced in a statement on Friday that two Greek F-16 jets had harassed a Turkish maritime patrol aircraft by putting it under radar lock while it was flying over Aegean international airspace. Radar lock means the Greek military planes' missiles were fixed on the Turkish aircraft during their flight over the Aegean Sea.

The aircraft was harassed by Greek fighter jets for one minute and 19 seconds while the radar lock of the Greek air defense system was kept on.

Turkish and Greek warplanes have engaged in dogfights over the Aegean many times in the past, but Greece has never activated its missile defense system against Turkish aircraft. Turkey and Greece are at odds over the boundaries of their airspace due to a long-running territorial dispute over the Aegean.

Meanwhile, the statement released by the TSK also stated that, on Thursday, Syrian missiles harassed a Turkish Air Force F-16 by placing it under radar lock while it was flying over Turkey's southern province of Hatay.

The statement noted that the F-16, which was on patrol duty over the Syria-Turkey border area, was put under radar lock for 30 seconds.
