GREAT VILLAGE – A request for a possible sale of the St. James United Church here has been approved.

Faye Smith, recording secretary for Truro Presbytery, confirmed approval was given at the Presbytery’s meeting on June 20.
“The congregation asked to proceed with the sale via a letter to the Truro Presbytery,” said Smith. “The Presbytery executive approved that request, but it didn’t give them permission to sell the church. It gives them permission to proceed in putting the church on the market.”
The conditions of the sale, if there is one, would need to be approved before the deal was done.
“The sale conditions would go to the United Church of Canada for paperwork, and it would come back to the Truro Presbytery with all those conditions,” she said.
Vernon McCully, chair of the Great Village Pastoral Charge and one of the trustees of the church, said a month ago that the congregation numbers were dwindling and the money collected during each service was just enough to pay the minister.
While the church was in trouble financially, McCully said it wasn’t to the point where it was in debt. However that could turn around at any time the longer it stays open, with high insurance and heating costs.
McCully said the approval to proceed was the reaction he was expecting.
“I couldn’t see (the Truro Presbytery) wanting it,” he said. “You know, on the Internet in Kings County, there are six united churches up for sale. It’s unreal. We are not alone.”
The St. James United Church was built in 1883 to replace the original church, which was built in 1845 but caught fire in 1882.
McCully said the next step is to meet with a real estate agent, which is scheduled for Thursday of this week.
“I would think within the week (after meeting with the agent), we would have it up for sale,” he added.
Although the church is moving forward with the listing, services will continue there as long as they are able to.

“We’re not making any move until it’s crunch time. We won’t be stopping services, even if the building is sold,” he said.
