Chinese Fighter Jets Goose Japan Near Disputed Islands
Some 10 Chinese fighter jets entered Japan's air defense identification zone near the disputed Senkaku or Diaoyu islands on Thursday afternoon, prompting Tokyo to scramble fighter jets, NHK reported.
This is the first time fighter jets entered the area since Japan bought the islands from their private owner. The Chinese government reportedly sent fighter jets in protest at press reports that Tokyo is mulling over the idea of firing warning shots at aircraft that intrude into the airspace over the islands.
Nihon TV reported that the Chinese fighters were J7 and J10 jets that flew in formation and entered the zone three times. They all withdrew before the Japanese jets arrived and did not enter Japanese airspace.
The ADIZ is an area on the periphery of sovereign airspace where foreign aircraft must identify themselves.
